Based on a sketch by Chandler McLellan, the Cullen family explores silhouettes inspired by the beauty of Scottish dry stone construction. The dry stone technique appears rugged, yet it requires a precise understanding of balance. To give the Cullen floor lamp this sense of organic tension, some of the ‘stones’ are intentionally placed off-center. Recalling the comfort of a ferry station during harsh conditions, the artist Chandler McLellan sought to imbue this pendant with a soft warmth in both materiality and luminance. A thick off-white cotton crochet fabric has been stretched across the tiered framework of the fixture, naturally dipping in certain areas. As the weave eases and pulls, it creates larger and smaller gaps for light to escape. Coordinating with the earthy nature of the cord, the Bronze metalwork anchors this light-as-air pendant. In this interpretation, the frame of the shade is wrapped in Bleached Abaca rope, allowing light to pass through. As a design detail, the Vintage Gold Leaf stem suspending the shade appears to pierce through the entire fixture, finishing in a decorative sphere.
